For You and Me

When Jesus was in the high priest's judgment hall, they tried to find something for which they could condemn Him. The Jews were not permitted to put anyone to death, the Romans did that, but the Jews had to find something for which the Romans would put Him to death. The high priest had people come up to condemn Jesus but found nothing, finally, two came and said they heard Jesus said “destroy this temple and in three days I will build it again.

They thought He was talking of the big temple, but Jesus was talking of His bodily temple. He foretold His own death and resurrection. The apostle Paul said, “The wages of sin is death, also all have sinned.”

Jesus came to become the substitute and pay the death penalty for our sins. Jesus could have gone to the temple, laid down on the altar as a lamb and have the high priest quietly put Him to death, to become the sacrifice. Jesus came for much more that just death. He came to show Heaven's love for sinful man, and to understand the problems of humanity and feel the pain and humiliation.

Early in the morning, Pilate, the Roman governor, was summoned to the judgment hall and was asked to condemn Jesus to death. He questioned Jesus but found no fault in Him. The Jews kept clamouring for His death anyway.

Pilate had Jesus stripped to the waist and whipped, but that didn't satisfy the leaders. The whole bank of roman soldiers took Jesus into the common hall, made a crown of thorns and sexually abused Him. Pilate took Jesus into his private hall and asked Jesus who He was and where He came from. Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight.” Jesus continued, “I came into this world to bear witness to the truth.”

Jesus came to teach the truth about God's love, forgiveness, sins, Heaven, death, resurrection, eternal life and peace. Then Pilate asked the question, “What is truth?”

Pilate knew a lot about truth and that he should let Jesus go as He was innocent. The Jews had threatened Pilate that they would accuse him to Caesar if he didn't have Jesus crucified. Pilate, to save his job, his reputation, his luxurious living, had Jesus whipped for the second time and condemned Him to death, the worst death known, crucifixion. Then He was led away to Calvary, just outside the city, carrying His own cross on His back.

There He was stripped, His hands and feet nailed to the wooden cross, then the cross was lifted and set into the hole that had been dug for it. Everyone could see His suffering and shame. Jesus said, “Father forgive them.”

Then they laughed at Him and made fun of Him saying, “If thou be the Son of God, come down and we will believe You.”

Satan wanted Him to give up and come down. If He died on the cross, satan would be charge for murder. This was 9:00 in the morning, people were having a good time but at noon with the sun high and bright in the sky, God put His mighty hand over the sun and plunged this horrible scene into total darkness. Now it was the people's turn to be scared.

His disciples and followers hoped Jesus would use this opportunity to come down from the cross but this was not Heaven's plan. Then followed three dark and scary hours for the multitude. They could not see to go home. At the end of three hours, as it had come, so it went, the sun came out and everything seemed to turn to normal, but not quite.

Jesus said in a loud voice, “IT IS FINISHED.”

What was finished? Jesus has signed the cheque and died. That paid for all confessed sins. The big veil in the temple tore from top to bottom. The centurion said, “surely this was the Son of God.”

Jesus had gone through immoral pain, scourging abuse, He was forsaken, made fun of, humiliated, anything and everything that we could experience, He experienced. Whatever problems you have, tell Jesus, He understands because He was there once. Jesus showed Heaven's love for mankind. He gave His life, everything, to save us sinners. What can we do? Jesus said, “If you love Me follow me and keep my commandments.
