God's Secrets Revealed

The book of Daniel is not only a prophetic book but it is also a wonderful story of God's love and concern for all people. The beginning of the book tells of the Babylonians. Then the world power invading Judea and Jerusalem then them taking captive boys about 13 years old who are handsome, smart and who have the potential as statesmen. They have these boys 'fixed' then take them to Babylon.

In Babylon a problem came up that had to do with diet. God had given his people the Jews a healthy diet of clean meats which the diet prescribed by the king did not follow. Daniel went to his supervisor and asked for a vegetarian diet. They put Daniel and his three close friends on a trial diet for ten days and found that they did better on their vegetarian diet than the others on the regular diet. So, they gave them their vegetables and water.

The boys went to school to learn the language and the teaching of Babylon. After three years they came before the king who found these four much above the others. So much better in fact than his wise men so they were give jobs as wise men.

Shortly after this the king, Nebuchadnezzar, had a dream of which really impressed him so he called in his wise men but not the new boys. These men said to the king tell us the dream for we need to know the dream to be able to tell the meaning. But the king had forgotten the dream.

At the insistence of the king to be able to tell the dream and it's meaning the wise men admitted they had no connection with a higher power. Now the king became very angry and ordered to execute all the wise men. They came for Daniel and he went and asked the king for time and it was granted. Then Daniel and his three friends prayed. That same night Daniel had the same dream and understood it's meaning.

Daniel went to the king (there probably were a lot of the government men and wise men there too). The king asked Daniel, “Are you able to tell the dream and it's meaning?”

Daniel said that the wise men could not but he pointed up and said there is a God up in Heaven who will give it. The Babylonians were idol worshipers and God, through Daniel, intended them to get to know Him, the God of Heaven.

Daniel said to the king, “You saw a great image of a man, bright and scary. It had a head of gold, breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of brass, legs of iron and feet of iron and clay. A very strange looking creature.” Then Daniel explained the significance of these different metals. They represented kingdoms that would follow one another. The head of gold represented Nebuchadnezzar. Babylon was the richest of the kingdoms that would follow.

When Daniel had finished the king fell down before Daniel and made an offering to him. Then the king said it was true that the God of Daniel was a God of gods because He could reveal the secret. A great admission but there is no evidence that they had Daniel tell them more about the great God of Heaven who could tell what he had dreamed.

The Babylonians were an idol worshiping and immoral lot. They loved their idols for they put no restraints on their way of life. But we see in what is going on that it doesn't matter what people are like, God loves us and give all an opportunity to get to know Him as a loving and kind God. Accept Him and be saved.

The king likes the idea of him being represented as the head of gold. We will look at that in the new year. We will recess for the next few weeks.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
